TALKING GHOSTS — this Merced, California band achieves a rare victory for true storytellers with poetic tales of sorrow and beauty. The songs simmer patiently and tenderly. But soon, the music bubbles and boils as Talking Ghosts meticulously arouse and crescendo, reminding listeners of why we listen to music in the first place— to feel our hearts beat and radiate that rhythm through our feet and into the ground, connecting us to what’s real. It’s no wonder Northern California and musicians all over the West Coast are obsessed with RC and Talking Ghosts—they know exactly how to make us feel like animals again, return us to nature.

RC has played with Pinback, Islands, Y La Bamba, Dave Dondero, Willy Tea, Mira, Decemberists, Xiu Xiu, Mount Erie, Neko Case, Calexico, Deerhoof, Cave Singers, Frank Black, and more.

STRANGE VINE—"Descending from the Sierra Nevada mountains and now repping Fresno hard as granite, the blistering blues duo Strange Vine arent just lighting the central valley up with their stomping sound, the band is exploding right now after a national tour that has brought them widespread attention. Think the Black Keys if they were willing to get a little mud on their boot, or Jack White under a heavy flannel and barking at the moon. Strange Vine is the combination of  Ian Blesse on drums and Rhodes piano, and guitarist Toby Cordova, armed with finger slides and cigar box six strings. Individually, each would be a powerhouse unto himself, but together, Strange Vine is an all out rollicking, crowd-pleasing force of nature.

Originally bonding over an obsession about obscure blues music, the two spared no time in building up an impressive array of heavy and swampy arrangements that harken back to simpler times, while gathering some trippy psychedelic elements into their largely organic Americana rock and Delta approved blues. This combination of inspired ingredients transforms Strange Vines analogue sound into something fresh and vibrant in its electric fury.

Even so, with all of this racous music theres still the fact that youve got to get people to hear it. Not a problem for Strange Vine, who have spent the better part of the past two years on the road, gear packed tight in a single car, and traversing up and down the west coast, over the plains, to Nashville and beyond. Sharing the stage with legends like BB King and contemporaries like Kurt Vile, Strange Vine are only adding to their unstoppable momentum and leaving in their wake an equally obsessed fan base. While the we wait for an official release from Strange Vine, they make their Noise Pop headlining debut and return to the Bottom of the Hill for a truly massive night."

BUZZARD LAMAR — ALBUM RELEASE! —

When Weston Perry and his family moved from Memphis, Tennessee, to Modesto, California, COVID was about to hit and make it hard as heck to integrate into a new community— but as soon as shows started coming back and amps were reigniting in public spaces again, Weston was right there with his guitar and that quintessential southern ability to tell a damn good story.

Now, with the brains of Chris Giambelluca (Calexico), Steven Michael Werning (guitar wails— thank goodness we snagged him back out of Los Angeles), and Travis Vick (Boy Scouts, Travis Vick Music), Buzzard Lamar has its new name and a new album hot off the press. Celebrate with us at this Off The Air show!

SUVER— Suver is an 8-piece band from the East Bay. Their first single, "Blanket," for their upcoming debut LP was released on 12/12/2025 alongside a performance of "Blanket with Oakland-based Free Key Choir. Their debut LP "I Love You Mug" will be released on March 11th, 2026, available for vinyl preorder at suver.bandcamp.com now.

LIANA WARREN—Liana Warren is a singer-songwriter based in Oakland, California. Her work is marked by her intimate honesty, robust lyricism, intricate fingerpicked guitar, and energetic emotionality compared to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Adrianne Lenker, and John Prine.

GRANDADDY—

Grandaddy's coming home!

Formed in Modesto in 1992, with the group eventually consisting of Jason Lytle, Aaron Burtch, Tim Dryden, Jim Fairchild and Kevin Garcia, the band initially broke through with 1997's Under the Western Freeway and the NME-praised single "Summer Here Kids." The band's sound, "atmospheric electronics meet warped Americana," crystallized on 2000's Sophtware Slump, which was met with breathless hype and earned the band "Next Big Thing" status.

Tireless rounds of international touring and mountains of fawning press led to 2003's Sumday, increasing album sales, more touring, more press, TV appearances, and a slot on the main stage at the Glastonbury festival. The band produced another EP, and an album entitled Just Like the Fambly Cat, before disbanding in 2006.  Following a brief live reunion in 2012, Grandaddy fully returned in 2017 with Last Place, their first album in over a decade, which was embraced by fans and acclaimed by critics.  A sold-out tour was cut short by the unexpected death of Kevin Garcia, and all future plans were canceled indefinitely. Grandaddy reformed again in 2025 for its first North American tour in over 20 years in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of their landmark album The Sophtware Slump.

Welcome to OFF THE AIR Presents—where indie music gets loud, quiet, weird, and honest in the heart of Modesto. We’ve been curating high-level indie music since 2005, and we’re here to remind you that live music is still king. No gimmicks, no overproduced white noise—just honest performances from the artists that get you talking, thinking, and feeling something. This is your scene. This is your community, a place to make friends and find your people. Come for the music, stay for the friendships and memories that last forEVAH.

Shows are general admission, all-ages, welcoming, and safe.

Why Modesto?

There’s something about Modesto that breeds a special kind of artist and art lover. Maybe it’s the relentless self-deprecation, the way we mock our own cultural landscape like we’re in on some cosmic joke. But there’s something deeper at play, something woven into the fabric of this city.

The musicians, the creators—they carry a certain grit, a quiet resolve that seems born out of Modesto’s hard edges. They’re not chasing fame, and yet, they pull you in, leaving you marveling at their raw, unvarnished truth.

Maybe it’s the way this place makes them see the world—no illusions, just the meaningful struggle of it all. It’s that very lens that turns the mundane into something damn near lovely.

In our Off The Air world, Modestans who complain about Modesto are probably on the brink of doing something really, really cool. That’s because, in this Off The Air space, we are here to explore how to make our world more fun, more communal, more welcoming, and all with the old-as-Central-Valley-dirt spirit of rock and roll.
